A Grand Challenge: Full Reactive Modeling of a Multi-cellular Animal

چکیده

One of the central issues in software and system engineering over the last couple of decades has been to develop languages, methods and tools for the reliable construction reactive systems. The term, coined in 1985, denotes systems whose complexity stems not necessarily from complicated computation but from complicated reactivity over time. Such systems are most often highly concurrent and time-intensive, and exhibit hybrid behavior that is predominantly discrete in nature but has continuous aspects too. Their structure consists of many interacting, often distributed, components. Very often the structure itself is dynamic, with its components being repeatedly created and destroyed during the system’s life span. The heart of the problem is the need for good approaches to modeling and analyzing the dynamic behavior of such systems.

A Grand Challenge for Computing: Towards Full Reactive Modeling of a Multi-cellular Animal

Biological systems can be modeled beneficially as reactive systems, using languages and tools developed for the construction of man-made systems. Our long-term aim is to model a full multicellular animal as a reactive system ---specifically, the C. elegans nematode worm, which is complex, but very well-defined in terms of anatomy and genetics. The challenge is to construct a full, true-to-all-k...

Probabilistic Multi Objective Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch Considering Load Uncertainties Using Monte Carlo Simulations

Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) is a multi-variable problem with nonlinear constraints and continuous/discrete decision variables. Due to the stochastic behavior of loads, the ORPD requires a probabilistic mathematical model. In this paper, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used for modeling of load uncertainties in the ORPD problem. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained mul...

On the Full Organism Challenge: Or, Can we Computerize an Elephant?

We show how techniques from computer science and software engineering can be applied beneficially to research in the life sciences. I will discuss the idea of comprehensive and realistic modeling of biological systems, where we try to understand and analyze an entire system in detail, utilizing in the modeling effort all that is known about it. I will address the motivation for such modeling an...

Grand challenges on the theory of modeling and simulation

Modeling & Simulation (M&S) is used in many different fields and has made many significant contributions. As a field in its own right, there have been many advances in methodologies and technologies. In 2002 a workshop was held in Dagstuhl, Germany, to reflect on the grand challenges facing M&S. Ten years on, a series of M& S Grand Challenge activities are marking a decade of progress and are p...

System Architectures and Environment Modeling for High - Speed Autonomous Navigation

Successful high-speed autonomous navigation requires integration of tools from robotics, control theory, computer vision, and systems engineering. This thesis presents work that develops and combines these tools in the context of navigating desert terrain. A comparative analysis of reactive, behavior-based, hybrid, and deliberative control architectures provides important guidelines for design ...
